Welcome to the STAR Family Center!
Currently, there are 2690 homeless women, men, and children in Volusia and Flagler counites (as identified in the 2007 point-in-time survey) of whom 2131 are unsheltered. In the past year, the Volusia County School District had more than 2000 children registered as homeless. The STAR Family Center provides 58% of homeless services in Volusia county through three (3) vitally important community resources designed to meet the needs of our homeless population: The "Bridge of Hope" hot meal program at 316 North Street, operates seven days a week in partnership with Halifax Urban Ministries, staffed monthly by over 400 faith-based volunteers, feeding 10,000 homeless individuals a month. The STAR Family Center Direct Services program at 340 North Street, operates the Bond-Vargas Care Clinic five days a week with a full-time nurse who through a partnership with Halifax Hospital offering basic health care needs to clients. Two Thursdays a month, a rotation of physicians from Halifax Hospital volunteer in the clinic. This clinic has saved local taxpayers almost 1.5 million dollars this past year alone by diverting homeless individuals from the emergency room. The direct services program also offers: assistance in applying for and obtaining birth certificates; mail distribution for local clients; use of computers to apply for public assistance, employment, and housing; showers, haircuts, laundry facilities, and clothing distribution; assistance in obatining work boots required for day labor employment; distribution of refurbished bicycles for transportation. The STAR Family Shelter at 605 Seagrave, provides housing and supportive services to homeless families with children and medically needy homeless individuals. The STAR Family Shelter is comprised of 25 rooms with 94 beds. The beds are bunk beds - cribs are available for infants. The STAR Family Shelter offer the opportunity for up to a six-month stay, during which families receive case managment and assistance in obtaining permanent employment and housing, to establish savings accounts and access to all direct services.
